“schlocky production undermines Rossini’s masterpiece […] Audi managed to screw up even this opera’s great final reveal […] this Tell was a heartbreaker for anyone who believes in opera as drama”
Ook The New York Times liep niet warm voor de regie van Audi:
“Rather than conjuring nature, these surreal elements distract you from the characters as you ponder what Mr. Audi’s point may be […] Mr. Audi stages several choral scenes with strangely stylized formality”
WQXR was evenmin opgetogen:
“Take an abstract approach like Audi and it rings false in different ways, but is at least decorative”
En ook New York Classical Review was niet enthousiast:
“the new production by Pierre Audi is no great argument for the piece […] His solutions are unimaginative […] The director makes matters more difficult for himself by trying to outsmart the libretto”
“Plot points, like the opera’s complicated denouement, were less clear”
“Boos greeted director Pierre Audi, who avoided even a hint of camp in this lurid epic. Unfortunately, he could do little more than line up his singers” (New York Post)
“It didn’t look interesting – or dramatic or effective or even coherent” (Financial Times)
